What Is Swift Microwave Immunotherapy? The Modern Way to Treat Plantar Warts

A treatment option many patients — and even some healthcare providers — don't yet know exists
Plantar warts are one of the most stubborn, frustrating foot concerns we treat. They're persistent, they can be painful when walking, and for many patients, they've already tried multiple treatments without success. If that sounds familiar, we want to introduce you to a treatment that has changed the game for our patients: Swift Microwave Immunotherapy.
Here's what it is, how it works, and why we're proud to offer it at Sole Renewal.
What Is a Plantar Wart, Exactly?
A plantar wart is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) entering the skin through tiny breaks, usually on the sole of the foot. Unlike warts elsewhere on the body, plantar warts are pushed inward by the pressure of walking and standing, which is why they often feel like a hard, painful lump embedded in the skin rather than sitting on the surface.
They are notoriously difficult to treat because the virus lives within the skin tissue itself — meaning surface-level treatments often address only what's visible while the underlying infection persists.

Why Plantar Warts Are Harder to Treat Than People Expect
If you've tried over-the-counter wart treatments, freezing kits, or even previous in-clinic treatments without lasting success, you're not alone. Many traditional treatments — like topical acids or cryotherapy (freezing) — work by destroying the surface tissue of the wart. The problem is that the HPV virus causing the wart can remain in the deeper skin layers, allowing the wart to return even after the visible portion is removed.
This is exactly the gap that Swift Microwave Immunotherapy was designed to close.
How Swift Microwave Immunotherapy Works
Swift uses controlled microwave energy delivered directly to the wart tissue through a small handheld device. Rather than simply destroying the surface of the wart, the microwave energy heats the affected tissue in a way that triggers the body's own immune system to recognize and respond to the HPV virus causing the wart.

In other words, Swift doesn't just remove what you can see — it helps your immune system fight the underlying viral infection itself. This is a meaningful difference, and it's a big part of why Swift has shown such strong outcomes for warts that haven't responded to other treatments.
No cutting, no anesthetic required. Treatment is performed directly in clinic with no incisions or numbing injections needed.
Sessions are quick. Most treatments take only a few minutes per wart, depending on size and location.
Multiple sessions are typically needed. Like most effective wart treatments, Swift usually requires a series of sessions (usually 3-4) spaced a few weeks apart to fully resolve the wart.
Minimal downtime. Patients are able to walk normally immediately after treatment.
What Does Treatment Feel Like?
Patients describe the sensation as a brief, intense heat or stinging feeling during the few seconds the microwave energy is applied — followed by minimal to no discomfort afterward. Because there's no cutting or open wound created, recovery is generally much easier than with more invasive wart removal methods.
Your nurse will walk you through exactly what to expect before your first session, and we always make sure you're comfortable and informed throughout the process.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Swift?
Swift is particularly well-suited for patients who:
Have plantar warts that haven't responded to over-the-counter treatments
Have tried cryotherapy (freezing) without lasting success
Have warts that keep recurring after previous treatment
Want to avoid more invasive procedures like surgical excision
Are looking for a treatment that addresses the underlying viral cause, not just the visible symptom

As with any treatment, a proper assessment is the first step. Not every foot lesion is a wart — corns, calluses, and other skin conditions can sometimes resemble warts, which is exactly why a clinical assessment matters before treatment begins.
Is It a Wart or a Corn?
This is actually one of the most common questions we get, and it's an important one — because the treatment for each is completely different. A wart typically has tiny black dots visible within it (these are small clotted blood vessels), disrupts the natural skin lines of the foot, and may be tender when squeezed from the sides. A corn, by contrast, usually has a smooth, waxy centre, follows the natural skin lines, and is typically more painful with direct pressure from above.
If you're not sure which one you're dealing with, that uncertainty alone is a good reason to come in for an assessment before trying any at-home treatment.
Why We're Proud to Offer Swift at Sole Renewal
We brought Swift Microwave Immunotherapy into our clinic because we were tired of watching patients struggle through wart after wart, treatment after treatment, without lasting results. Swift represents a genuinely different approach — one that works with the body's own immune response rather than simply attacking the surface of the problem.
We've also been actively reaching out to local dermatologists and podiatrists to let them know this option is available, because we believe more patients deserve access to a treatment that actually addresses the root of the issue.
If you've been living with a stubborn plantar wart and have started to feel like nothing works — we'd genuinely love the chance to show you something that might.
Curious If Swift Is Right for You?
Whether you're dealing with a brand new wart or one that's outlasted every treatment you've tried, we're happy to assess your foot and talk you through whether Swift Microwave Immunotherapy is the right next step.
