What to Expect at Your First Foot Care Appointment

If you've never had a professional first foot care appointment foot care appointment before, you might not be sure what to expect — or whether you even need one. Maybe someone recommended it to you. Maybe your doctor suggested it. Maybe your nails have gotten to a point where you're struggling to manage them safely on your own.

Whatever brought you here, welcome. At Sole Renewal Footcare & Wellness, a foot care appointment is something a little different from what you might be picturing. It's not a sterile, clinical experience — and it's certainly not a nail salon. It's the best of both worlds: the safety and expertise of nurse-led medical care, wrapped in a genuinely soothing, restorative experience that leaves you feeling cared for from head to toe.

Most of our clients leave wondering why they waited so long. Here's exactly what to expect.

Step 1: A Warm Welcome & Health History

Your first appointment begins before we ever touch your feet. We'll take a few minutes to get to know you and gather some basic health information. This isn't just paperwork — it's an essential part of providing safe, personalized care.

We'll ask about things like:

•      Any medical conditions you've been diagnosed with (especially diabetes, heart disease, or circulatory issues)

•      Medications you're currently taking — particularly blood thinners

•      Any allergies or sensitivities

•      Previous foot concerns, injuries, or surgeries

•      What's been going on with your feet lately and what's brought you in today

This information helps us tailor your care, adjust our technique where needed, and make sure we're watching for anything that requires extra attention.

Step 2: A Clinical Assessment of Your Feet

This is what sets a nurse-led appointment apart from anywhere else. Before treatment begins, your nurse will perform a thorough visual and physical assessment of your feet and lower legs.

We're looking at:

•      Skin condition — dryness, cracking, redness, discolouration, or any open areas

•      Nail health — thickness, shape, colour, signs of fungal infection, or ingrown nails

•      Circulation — skin temperature, colour, and capillary refill

•      Sensation — whether you have normal feeling in your feet

•      Swelling, deformities, or structural concerns

•      Any wounds, lesions, or areas that look like they need further attention

We'll share what we observe as we go. If we notice something you should be aware of, we'll let you know — clearly and without alarm. Our goal is to keep you informed, not worried.

Step 3: A Soothing Foot Soak

This is the moment many of our clients say they didn't know they needed until they experienced it. Before your treatment begins, we invite you to relax with a warm, soothing foot soak (as long as there are no contraindications with your health to this).

The soak isn't just a luxury — it serves a real clinical purpose. Soaking softens thickened nails and skin, making treatment more comfortable and precise. It improves circulation to the feet. And for many of our clients, it's the first moment of genuine relaxation they've had all day.

We believe that feeling cared for and being cared for aren't two separate things. The foot soak is where that philosophy begins.

Step 4: Your Personalized Foot Care Treatment

With your assessment complete and your feet beautifully softened from the soak, your nurse will provide a customized treatment tailored to your needs. This is where medical precision and esthetic care come together seamlessly.

Your treatment typically includes:

•      Nail trimming and shaping: Done carefully and precisely, with the right technique for your nail type — whether your nails are thick, curved, brittle, or otherwise difficult to manage safely.

•      Callus and hard skin reduction: Using professional-grade tools, we gently reduce thickened skin and calluses to relieve pressure and restore comfort.

•      Ingrown nail care: Addressed safely and skillfully — reducing discomfort and minimizing the risk of infection.

•      Nail filing and smoothing: Edges are smoothed to prevent snagging or skin trauma.

•      Therapeutic moisturizing: We apply a nourishing moisturizer to support skin hydration and softness, paying special attention to dry or cracked areas.

Every instrument we use is properly sterilized between clients. Infection prevention is non-negotiable in our practice.

Step 5: The Finishing Touch — A Warm Towel Wrap

We close every appointment the same way: with a comforting warm towel wrap.

It's a small detail — but it speaks to everything we believe about the kind of care you deserve. After your treatment, the warmth of the towel soothes your feet, helps the moisturizer absorb, and signals something important: you've just been truly, completely cared for.

From the first warm soak to the last warm towel, every step of your Sole Renewal appointment is designed with both your health and your comfort in mind. Because exceptional foot care should never have to choose between the two.

Step 6: Education & Your Personalized Care Plan

Before you leave, your nurse will walk you through anything you should be doing at home to support your foot health between appointments. This may include:

•      Daily moisturizing routines

•      Proper footwear for your foot type or condition

•      What to watch for at home — especially important for clients with diabetes or circulation concerns

•      How often you should be seen based on your individual needs

We'll also let you know if we'd recommend a referral to your family physician, a chiropodist, or another specialist — and explain exactly why.

How Long Does an Appointment Take?

An initial clinic appointment at Sole Renewal is approximately 45 minutes. That gives us enough time to complete a thorough assessment, deliver your full treatment, and have a meaningful conversation about your care — without ever rushing.

You are never just a number on a schedule here. You're a person, and your feet deserve our full, unhurried attention.

What Should You Bring?

•      A list of your current medications (or your prescription bottles)

•      Any relevant medical history you'd like us to know about

•      The footwear you wear most often

•      If you wear compression stockings, go ahead and wear them — we want to see how you normally present

Who Should Be Coming to See a Foot Care Nurse?

Nurse-led foot care is especially important if you:

•      Have diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, or poor circulation

•      Are on blood thinners or other medications that affect healing

•      Have difficulty reaching or seeing your feet

•      Have thick, fungal, or ingrown nails that are difficult or painful to manage

•      Are an older adult whose feet need regular monitoring

•      Haven't had your feet properly assessed in a long time — or ever

And honestly? Even if none of the above applies to you — your feet work hard every single day. They deserve to be properly cared for. And every once in a while, they deserve to be pampered too.
